Memories of UES

Carol Collins ’41
In the third grade we had a harbor on the campus... », in the courtyard, and we built boats. We chiseled boats out and had derricks on our ships. In the fifth grade we studied the Westward Movement. I remember the Indians and I remember a little square dancing, but mainly Virginia Reels. In the sixth grade we studied Egypt. Of course singing and sitting down with my songbook was my most fun, because singing has always been my love. We had percussion instruments and we had music every day. Students played the instruments and we sat at our chairs with our little songbooks and sang a lot. And we did art. We did paintings and worked with clay. Every day was an adventure. Happy times, I never minded going to school. I loved it.
Susan (Prescott) Johnston
The UES memories are numerous and wonderful. I began my 5-year teaching career at UES ... »in 1967 as a teaching intern on a team with Kent Lewis, Robert Machatka, and Barbara Fisher; it is hard to imagine a more gifted group of outstanding mentors. Madeline Hunter encouraged us all to engage in consistent dialogue about the teaching/learning process and enabled us to become researchers in our own classrooms. When two former UES colleagues (Edie Buchanan and Dee Hanson) called me to join them on the faculty of the CSUDH College of Education, I did so with a heart full of gratitude for the invaluable foundation I was given at UES. Now, after 33 years as a university faculty professor, the images of my wonderful, exciting, and formative years as an educator are as vivid as ever.
George Brown, ’87
To come up with one UES memory is really hard to do... ». There are so many special things that I got from attending UES. I'm still in contact with many of my classmates. UES truly made me who I am today.
Andrea, ’89
I remember doing arts and crafts and having friends. I remember playing on the yard with my sister.
Cynthia Ogle, ’66-’71
My memories of UES are so special!! They include ... »the reenactment of the Pilgrims in the woods surrounding the old wooden wagon, the trampoline, the Gully, the unicycles, the rope climbs, the sandboxes outside the classrooms, the teacher conferences I got to be part of and my mom and my teachers all sitting around talking about ME!! It was a wonderful experience and I will forever cherish those memories.
Derek Bok, ’41
I remember UES well. In fact, I still have ... »a doorstop that I made in the 4th grade and a book about the Pilgrims that I wrote in the 5th grade.
Cynthia Desrochers, Teacher, ’75-’83
As a UES teacher, I remember the students best of all... ». What a wonderful group, year after year after year. And I remember Peter, our gardener, Cynthiana, our beloved VP, and "M" — for Madeline — the most inspirational leader one could ever have. As a 25-year faculty member at CSU Northridge, who has now proudly assumed the role of CSU director of the Institute for Teaching and Learning at the Chancellor's Office, I so value the many lessons learned from my UES colleagues, such as Doug, Joan, Jack, Anne, and Enid. Memories never to be forgotten! Thanks!
Holly Reid, ’71
I attended summer school and remember making... » colorful puppets out of wood spoons... and walking through the Redwood Forest feeling like I was part of a magical fairytale!
Jodie Hauser-Morlet, Teacher ’93
On my first day of student teaching I found the lower elementary school students outside... » of the classroom using real tools to build wooden vehicles. There were saws, hammers, nails, clamps, and more! I knew immediately that I was in a special place. They later used their vehicles to perform different real-life scenarios in their block community that they had constructed. To this day, I model my teaching after Deanna Staake, my incredible supervising teacher, Sharon Sutton, my field coordinator and mentor, and Madeline Hunter, my inspiration. The educational opportunities that I received while student teaching at UES helped to shape the teacher that I have, and still hope to, become.
June Fee, Teacher ’54-’55, Summer ’60
What a thrill it was for me as a young woman to teach under the leadership of Corinne Seeds... ». Jane Stryker, the other Kindergarten teacher, was my mentor as I learned the excitement of teaching with a great faculty. After having a baby, I returned to teach summer school for one session.
Jill Strawbridge, ’71
I remember big class projects, like the Stock Market "game" our class played... ». And dissecting the chicken foot with Ms. de la Sota. Our overnight field trip to the local mountains. And the unicycles and President's Physical Fitness ribbons we could win. But I also look back fondly on little things like the saw horses and balsa wood airplanes we made, experiments in the gully, and the milk wagons (milk was a nickel). And of course the old classrooms and blacktop that are now gone...
Richard Williams, Director, ’84-’90
I was the UES Director during a difficult transition period... ». We established a substantial revision of the instructional program and the school's decision-making processes. A major challenge was thwarting the Chancellor's attempt to move the school to Santa Monica and make it a part of the Santa Monica-Malibu School District. For me, It was both a challenging and invigorating experience. have such fond memories of the UES teachers and staff and parents with whom I had the privilege to work. Please extend my best wishes to all at the reunion who were there with me. I think of them often.
Elizabeth Beerman Rothbart, ’60-’69
Miss Brown (how can anyone from these years NOT have her as a favorite memory)... running for balls in the gully... » ... Mr. Cunningham and trampolines, roller skates, parachutes...foursquare on the blacktop (I was terrible at it)...being taken out for testing (I used to volunteer just to get out of class)...Miss Richards....the library....going to Eames exhibits later in life and realizing the chairs from the library and class were all Eames designs!....Crushes on Mr. Machatka and Mr. Lawrence...so many wonderful memories of my 9 years at UES.
Kate Bloom, ’61-’69
Art slides with Mrs. Richards every Friday morning... ». Learning Spanish with Ms. Brown (Margarite) - she was tough. Building a canoe and eating Poi when learning about Hawaii in Ms. Gutierrez' class. Playing around in the gulley - my first kiss! Yes, having crushes on Mr. Matchatka and Mr. Lawrence (LOL). I still have my self portrait and much of my art work and felt SO PROUD when it was hung in the hall of the Administration building where every one could see it. Going to the beach on "ditch day" with our graduating class. Doing science experiments with Mr. Davis - he was so funny! In sex education, seeing the boy's film while the boys saw the girl's film - of course if was a huge mistake and the teachers quickly changed reels when they realized their error and heard us all giggling! These memories are ours forever - UES was a wonderful time.
Nyala, ’02-’07
UES was like a second home ... »there wasn't too much work pressure and it was always fun even the tests were somehow made fun i miss it so much and wish they made it go on through high school i will never forget UES ever
Joyce Rangen ’60
The gully, the harbor, my wonderful friends, Mr. Moss and Mr. Pollack... ’...and the even greater joy in watching my daughter Courtney (UES Class of 1993) benefit from the same rich experiences.
Elizabeth (Unger) Levitt, ’69-’78
Memories... the many friends that I made and still have. In fact I am married to another UES graduate... », Eric Levitt. The teachers and the wonderful ways they taught us to learn. From Mrs. Sally Breit, Mrs. Maxwell, Mrs. Harkness, Mr. Lawerence, Mr. Davis for science, Mrs. Sutton for music, Mrs. Richards for Art, Mr. Cunningham for PE, Mr. Sutton, and Les (now that was the one to have a crush on). As parents of two boys (9 and 7), Eric and I continue to compare their school experiences to the ones we so cherish. To my girlfriends : Trissy B., Lisa Y., Debbie S, Janine and Janet D., Maggie G., Chante M., Jane Y., Rachel D., Katy D., Melanie B., Alli B., and the list goes on... wishing you all the best!
Axel S., ’09
I am a current student of UES, and I love the school... ». Great teachers and staff. My favorite memory is a two-day field trip to Sea World. That memory is one of several.
Adam Schaffer, ’74 (and current parent)
Science with Mr. Davis, music with Mrs. Pinkston,... » art with Mrs. Richards, Spanish with Mrs. Brown, P.E. with Mr. Cunningham... on and on... all terrific memories...
Lon Bussell, ’70
I loved that school. So did my sister Julie! Mr. Davis, and Mrs. Richards had cool science and art classes... ». I'll never forget Leonard Nimoy showing up at the picnics with his Star Trek hair cut. The ears weren't pointy, though! The orchestra with Mrs. Pinkston (and Norah Graham) in my last year was my first one. I am now a professional musician in a major symphony! Seeing the grunion for our field trip during the last year was awesome. Does anyone remember Mr. Cunningham, the gym teacher? Also there was Larry Lawrence, Mrs. Fremdling (sp??), Mrs. C. and M. Brown(s), Mrs. Gutierrez. I have my Project H picture (on the dinosaur playground) up on the wall.
