Teaching

A study of the arts is an integral part of the UES educational program. Children paint, draw, sculpt, sing, dance and play instruments to learn about the arts, enhance their understanding of other subjects, and develop their powers of imagination, language, and critical thinking skills.

Visual Arts

Whether making art from their imagination, responding to their experiences, or exploring the work of great artists, working with paint, paper, crayons, clay, and other media fosters children's imagination and stimulates their creative thinking. Giving children the opportunity for a sensory response to color through paint, or three dimensional form through clay, leads to an individual expression of ideas and feelings and to a particular way of reflecting experience. Looking at and learning about the work of established artists exposes children to other ways of thinking and to different points of view. These kinds of experiences contribute to the development of children's aesthetic awareness and understanding.

Music

The study and performance of music plays an important role in children's development. Whether by singing a Mexican folk song or learning to play the violin, children enhance and refine their ability to communicate, learn creative expression, develop aural awareness and musical literacy, and increase their awareness of musical traditions in a variety of different cultures and societies. By performing throughout the year for a variety of audiences--including their classmates, parents and visitors--students have opportunities to develop their skills and self-confidence.

In addition to classroom activities that integrate music into instruction, UES students ages 7-12 may participate in the school's Instrumental Music Program, which offers lessons for violin, cello, flute, clarinet, sax, trumpet, trombone or drums/bells.

UES's instrumental music program offers students ages 7-12 lessons in violin, cello, flute, clarinet, sax, trumpet, trombone or drums/bells (7-year-olds may only choose violin). The program is coordinated and conducted by Children's Music Workshop. Children attend group lessons one day per week before school, from 7:45 - 8:25 a.m. All lessons are free of charge and assistance with obtaining instruments is available.

Students are introduced to the program in September with a special assembly that demonstrates the various instruments of the orchestra and explains the instrumental music program. All instrumental music students participate in a Gala Spring Concert presented in UCLA's Schoenberg Concert Hall each year.
